It was a stay at an Italian countryside estate that inspired the homeowners to remodel the galley kitchen in their 1929 suburban home. An addition by architect Arturo Palombo gave them the room to bring old-world charm and grandeur to the space, and with the help of Heidi Piron from Heidi Piron Design, their new kitchen not only gained space and style, it also used the trendiest kitchen paint color of the moment: navy!

Navy Kitchen Cabinet Paint Color
A perfect combination of color and texture makes this kitchen feel timeless. Here, the professional 48″ six-burner range from Wolf was selected to support the needs of a high performing chef. A distressed, reclaimed-looking beam is placed above the range for a rustic touch.
Kitchen Refrigerator
The refrigerator (#700TR) is to the right of the Wolf range and freezer drawers are to the left of it (#700BF), both by Sub-Zero.
Kitchen Island Countetop
The kitchen island countertop is cherrywood. Isn't it beautiful?
Kitchen Island Inspiration
Heavy physical distressing was inflicted to the cherrywood on the island to help impart the appearance of age. Weathered bronze cups and knobs complete the look.
Large Kitchen Island Design
The hand-crafted island, topped with an 11-foot cut of distressed cherrywood, seats five and functions as the chef's table for the husband, an avid cook.
Kitchen Remodel
The kitchen remodel started from the floor up. To give the kitchen an inviting farmhouse feel, pummeled limestone cut in irregularly sized tiles were selected. To create contrast with the light, rough-hewn stone, cherrywood painted in a deep blue finished, glazed and crackled, and distressed cherry on the island were chosen to convey a timeworn charm.

Navy Kitchen Cabinet Paint Color
The perimeter cabinetry is cherrywood painted in Benjamin Moore Mozart Blue with black glaze.
I have had so many people asking how to achieve the look above and I am very grateful that a color specialist volunteered to share on how to achieve a similar look. Here, he shares how to do it:
He used Sherwin Williams Secure Blue (SW 6508), which is similar to Benjamin Moore Mozart Blue.
Sherwin Williams Secure Blue (SW 6508) Crackle Finish:
Step 1. Distress the wood. Add cracks using any type of wood carving tool. Put dents and dings on the edge. Use any object to put marks on the flat surface as desired.
Step 2 . Apply basecoat. I used SW6508. Apply an even coat and let dry.
Step 3. Apply I sealer. I used Sherwin Williams T67F3 vinyl sealer. Scuff sand the sealer with 320 grit sand paper.
Step 4. Sayerlack SZ11000NN crackle lacquer. Apply in desired areas where you want cracks to appear.
Step 5. Black Glaze. I used D59B70 SB stain. Mix 1:4 with S66T30 Sherwin Williams glaze base. Apply, then wipe in a circular motion, then wipe clean.
Step 6. Using steel wool or scotch brite, "Hilite" areas which you would like the latex color to stand out more coming from underneath the black glaze. This is how you obtain that kinda "white wash" look in most pictures of that Mozart blue finish. If you do not like the look, reapply the black glaze and try again until the desired look is achieved.
Step 7. I applied a 3 Sheen Nitrocellulose lacquer, Sherwin Williams T75FH69. Scuff sand with 320 sand paper.
Step 8. Using the same black glaze and a chip brush, "dry brush" areas as desired, like corners and over crackle, to give an aged look.
Step 9. I applied a final coat of the Sherwin Williams T75FH69 3 sheen lacquer.
NOTE: This system can be modified to have a conversion varnish finish by catalyzing all sealers and lacquers with their appropriate catalyst.
